Making friends as an adult in Lagos is a logistics problem before it is a social one. Traffic eats the evening, everyone lives forty minutes apart, and the invitation that requires the most planning is the one that quietly dies in the group chat.
What works is something that repeats, sits close to home, and does not demand performance. Here is where people on this side of the city actually find each other.
Kinds of community

Run and fitness crews
Saturday morning run groups around Omole, Magodo and Alausa. Free, sweaty, and unusually good at turning acquaintances into friends.
Tech and product meetups
Ikeja carries a steady calendar of developer, design and startup meetups. Go for the talk, stay for the corridor conversation, which is the actual event.
Craft and making circles
Pottery tables, crochet groups, candle making sessions. Doing something with your hands beside someone removes the pressure to be interesting.
Faith and volunteer groups
Still the mainland's largest social infrastructure, and often the fastest route into a neighbourhood if you have just moved.
Board game and film nights
Small, recurring, low-stakes. The recurring part is what matters. One night is an event, twelve nights is a friendship.
Reading communities
Ours, and others. Reading beside people asks less of you than almost any other social format, which is precisely why it works.
An honest note
Some people come for the people, not the books
We run a reading hangout, so we are supposed to say everyone comes for the reading. Plenty do. But a fair number of regulars will tell you, once they trust you, that they came because they wanted to be around people and a book was the easiest excuse to hold.
That is fine by us. Loving the room more than the reading is not cheating. The hour of quiet does the hard part: it puts you in a space with strangers without asking you to charm anyone. By the time the talking starts, you have already spent an hour together, and that turns out to count.
If you are new to the mainland, recently back in Lagos, or just tired of only seeing colleagues, this is a soft place to land.
