A weekend on the Lagos mainland does not have to cost anything. Here are nine things we actually do, one of which happens to be ours.

Silent Book Club Mainland
A free monthly reading hangout at Atrium, Omole Phase 1. Read for an hour with the room, then talk books. No fee, no assigned title, no membership required.

A morning walk in Ndubuisi Kanu Park
Alausa's green lung. Early enough and it is quiet, shaded and entirely free to wander.

Window shopping Computer Village
Free if you have discipline. Worth it purely as a study in how fast Lagos can talk.

Wide, breezy and surprisingly pleasant for an evening stroll or a phone call you keep postponing.

Free gallery and pop-up openings
Ikeja and Maryland regularly host launches, exhibitions and craft markets with free entry. Follow local venues and turn up early.

Open mic and poetry nights
Plenty run on a free-entry, buy-a-drink basis. Some of the best writing in Lagos gets read out loud in rooms like these.

Sunday church-quiet streets
Omole and Magodo on a Sunday morning are as calm as Lagos gets. Take a book, take a bench, take your time.

Public and community libraries around Ikeja are underused and still let you sit and read for hours for nothing.

Silent Book Club Mainland costs nothing to attend. You only pay for what you order.
We meet at Atrium, Plot 18, Block 1a, Agoro Street, Omole Phase 1, Ikeja, Lagos, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. The next one is Saturday, 12 September 2026. An hour of quiet reading, then conversation for whoever wants it.
